Nasty really; ugly to look at, stinks when ripe, and sticky as all hell. When you bite into them though, mmm."— Malcom Teeds, caravanner

A deep red, almost black berry, the Blood Berry is a distinct sight within the wasteland. Often given away by it's smell, it is a favored of Browsers and travelers where ever found.

Biology[]

The Blood Berry grew out of the Elder Berry due to the radiation that soaked into the ground as a result of the Great War. It's color would deepen over successive generations and it's interior juices would begin to ooze out of it's pores when ripe. They start to grow in the spring, with berries appearing in early summer. These are ripe in the early autumn, which is when the plants are mainly spread, as birds and various animals eat the berries and seeds, and then excrete them further afield.

the cyanide found naturally in the berries also increased as they mutated however, with raw berries able to make adult humans moderately sick if ate raw in large quantities; while children and small animals such as Jackalope can be killed if they eat unchecked.

Properties[]

Blood Berry are known for their rich color and by their strong odor, a result of their sugars breaking down after they ripen. The bushes they grow on are known for small beige flowers and saw-shaped leaves as well as their habit to grow near deposits of waste. The quick decay of the berries combined with their high sugar content make them a favorite for brewers, and Blood Berry wines can be found throughout North America.

Habitat[]

Blood Berry can be found in predominately temperate areas, and are common in rural settings, but some can be found in urban ruins as well, though mainly in parks and green spaces. It favors locations with ample sunlight, though smaller bushes can be found in shaded areas. Some wastelanders have also taken to planting them near their homes, both for it's ornamental value, and for it's habit of attracting game.
