A parasitic species in wooded areas across the wasteland, Spine Vines are killed by many homesteaders whenever possible. Named for it's post-war development Spine Vine has no value to humans or animals and strangle trees.

Biology[]

A mutated off-shoot of the Convolvulus group of vines, Spine Vine began to emerge as a distinct species in the 2090s. Spines began to develop along the tendrils of the plant, used to help climb trees and other objects. As the plant further mutated it began to use these spines to syphon nutrients from it's host, leading to it's recognition as a parasite across the wasteland. It reproduces via specialized shoot, which works it's way into the ground where it releases roots to anchor it before climbing something else.

Properties[]

Known and named for their spiked tendrils, the plants also have small, waxy leaves to capture some sunlight, though this is far from enough to be sustainable. If consumed the vine has a bitter taste and will make humans very ill, with smaller creatures sometimes dying. It has a rust color year round, though this does brighten somewhat in the summer.

Habitat[]

Spine Vines are found almost exclusively in wooded areas, as the tendrils extract nutrients from trees and shrubs. While they are able to grow on other objects such as telephone poles and light posts, they are unable to survive for long, and have to be nurtured by another party. They are found widely in temperate areas, as they are able to survive relatively high heat or cold, though won't survive a prolong frost or heat-wave.
