They laughed me out of the Academy when I chose to specialize in arachnology, well who's laughing now? Me! I am the one doing all the laughing in Mentone! Exclusively! It is I who has monopolized the laughing in this locality! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!— Dr. Kline's Holotape

Another one of the seemingly innumerable ruined tiny towns of west Texas, Mentone is currently the lair of a power-mad arachnologist who menaces the region.

History[]

Pre-War[]

Mentone, with it's population of nearly 20 was the seat of Loving County, a county of not even 100 people throughout the later half of the 20th century to the morning of the Great War. The people survived the Great War, but succumbed in the following weeks due to a combination of fallout and the complete collapse of the infrastructure cutting them off from food and electricity.

Post-War[]

"Doctor" Robert Kline, a scientist and expert in arachnology of uncertain credentials, moved into the dilapidated county courthouse in 2269 along with his two modified Mr. Handy units: Cyclosternum Obscurum and Davus Mozinno. In the course of several months, he had established a laboratory and set about his work, namely the breeding of radscorpions and gigantic tarantulas. Using his robots, he sprayed down scent trails in order to lead his critters into isolated farmsteads and caravan routes to attack people, allowing him to plunder in their wake. Dr. Kline uses a hazmat suit laced with a special pheromone blend that allows him to walk among his dangerous menagerie with impunity. Efforts by nearby settlements to trace the creatures back to their nest has led to Mentone, but the ruins are so thoroughly inundated with the monsters that no attempt to reach the courthouse has succeeded so far. Dr. Kline has been able to avoid detection, so it's not yet known that human intervention is to blame for these attacks.

Layout[]

Mentone is a tiny town, built on a roughly square grid of 4x3 streets. It's comprised primarily of small homes, a gas station, post office, grocery store, courthouse, and a sheriff's office which is the largest structure. The main road leading in and out of Mentone is the TX-302 state highway. Currently, there is no sign of human habitation, radscorpions and giant tarantulas roam freely throughout the windswept ruins, and Dr. Kline has blacked out the courthouse's windows to hide the lights he uses. It is approximately 30 miles west of Wink Sink.
