The Soviet National Guard, commonly known as the Red Guard was the internal military police force of the Soviet Union and worked alongside the Soviet Army and local police forces. They were utilized as anti-terrorist units, riot control and peacekeeping forces.

History[]

The Soviet National Guard was created out of elements of several police forces and the Soviet Army after a complete reorganization of the Soviet military structure in early 2001. It was immediately created as a response to the Moscow Crisis and Caucasus Insurgency and saw widespread use in the Caucasus. Many of the National Guard units consisted of reserves, former military policemen and former policemen. Initially, they were tasked with combating terrorist and insurgencies and also acted as a peacekeeping force. The Soviet National Guard enforced domestic regulation on oil and resource consumption and manned several quota checkpoints across the Soviet Union as part of the regulations.

During the European Commonwealth-Middle Eastern War, the Soviet National Guard was deployed near the Turkish border and Crimea, not only to be on standby in case of escalation, but also because of insurgent forces in the Caucasus reportedly receiving training by Syrian and Turkish specialist. The Soviet National Guard relied heavily on the air force during their deployment in the Caucasus due to the terrain, without them, they would be easy pickings for insurgent and paramilitary forces. The Soviet National Guard would be focused on the southwestern portion of the Soviet Union until 2061 during the European Civil War. The Soviet Union called upon 400K+ reserve forces in order to defend its interest in Central and Eastern Europe, especially Romania. The Soviet National Guard assisted the Soviet Army in occupying the Romanian oil fields and worked to secure supply lines and maintain peace within any occupied villages, towns and cities.

As internal instability continued to rise within the Soviet Union, the Soviet National Guard acted as riot control, alongside local police forces, and they aimed to contain and disperse any violent mobs that arose. It was the Soviet National Guard that sustained major casualties against insurgent forces and paramilitary forces across the country. While the Soviet Army fought the external enemies, the Soviet National Guard fought internal enemies of the state on the home front and were often called cannon fodder due to the high casualty rates.
