Better bring your Rad-X.— Scavenger advising a new recruit

The Gash is a large unsightly stretch of land in central North Dakota that never recovered from the ravages of the Great War. Containing numerous nuclear missile silos and military bases, the area was targeted heavily by the Chinese and left heavily irradiated. To make matters worse, desertification set in shortly after in the 2100s, and the Gash became a radioactive dustbowl that fueled many of the radioactive twisters that have ravaged the regions to the south. This dangerous and remote location is what led to there being a colony of Grayfell in the Gash, as it was far away from anyone who could abuse them.

In the 2200s, people began to investigate the Gash in large numbers and found the area rich in radiation and potential scrap and scavengable goods. This led to a sort of Gold Rush in the 2240s as scavengers moved to the Gash en masse to try to get a piece of the salvage. This caused many to die but others managed to succeed, bringing more attention to the region by bigger groups such as the American Northern Army and Canadian Liberation Army, interested in potential buried military and medical technology.

Most of the scavengers have moved out of Gash by the 2270s due to the larger groups moving in but the Grayfell have stubbornly hung on, defiant of the ANA's numerous failed attempts to wipe them out. The CLA meanwhile continued scavenging bases, coming into conflict with the ANA at Yates AFB and Freedom's Progress. By 2287, the CLA has moved further into the region, using ghouls to scavenge deeper and deeper south. Whether this will flare up into open conflict again like in 2281 is to be seen.
